Taking a semester of digital photography helped me incorporate my own preferences into my artwork. I showed my personality, likes, and dislikes in my photos. This class taught me how to properly use a camera and how to use photoshop. In the beginning of the class I would open up photoshop and have no idea where to even start. By the end of the class I am able to work with photoshop with few mistakes. My photos got stronger as the class continued. My first pieces were not as good as my final ones. I quickly learned what experiences made good photos, and how to use the camera to take them.
I decided what I wanted to take photos of in the moment. I didn’t go by the plan that I made at the beginning of the year, I went with what was happening in the moment. One day it snowed so I took pictures of what the snow covered. I was planning on taking pictures with fairy lights, but instead I chose to take pictures in the snow. The whole reason I got the pictures of my friend doing jumps in the air was because I had just happened to have my camera with me and she thought of the idea.
“My interest in photography is not to capture an image I see or even have in my mind, but to explore the potential of moments I can only begin to imagine.” -Lois Greenfield. This also applies to the way that I take photos. I never really planned anything out. Everything just happened in the moment. This quote shows that you can’t always plan everything out, but you have to explore and get ideas from where you are and from your experiences in the moment. This is what I did throughout the semester of digital photography.
I am most proud of the picture of my friend doing a firebird jump. I put a black and white filter over it in photoshop. Before taking this class, I had no idea how to take a photo like this. After the class, I am able to capture jumps in the air. This photo shows my love for dance and I shows how I’ve grown through the semester. I really like how this photo turned out, I like how unique it is. I like the balance of everything in the photo.
I can definitely see growth throughout the semester. My first photo was a picture of a crown and mask. When you look at it, you can tell that I was unexperienced in the lighting department. You can also tell that I didn’t quite understand the rule of thirds. By my last photo you can see that I am more experienced in lighting and the rule of thirds. You can just see the growth from the first photo to the last. You can see my experiences in this semester through the photo I took.
In the future I would really like to dive deeper into photoshop. There are so many possibilities when it comes to editing and I would like to experience them. I would like to be able to do almost everything in photoshop with little to no mistakes. I think photoshop is a valuable tool that can be put to more positive use. For example, when I was taking picture of my friend in the doorway, there was part of a car in the background. I didn’t switch my photo around to accommodate for the car in the background, I just simply took the picture and edited out the car later. I would like to learn more about photoshop so I can fix simple things like that and have them look good.
Overall this semester has helped me grow as an artist. My artwork reflects my personality and preferences and taking this course helped me realize how I can incorporate them into my classes. Photography can create memories, beauty, and messages, and I’m so glad I got to be part of the process.
