5 Step Critique-
Step 1: Observe-
Step 2: Describe- There is a girl doing a firebird jump on the side of a hill. The photographer took the photo from a lower angle, capturing the jump in the air along with the plants underneath the girl. The girl is positioned in the middle of the photograph. The plants and the hill are in the lower third. The photo has been filtered black and white. It has been printed on 8.5x11 glossy paper, and framed with a black mat frame.
Step 3: Analyze- In this photo, line creates movement. This connection can be seen in the position that the girl is jumping in. Your eye first goes to the girl, looking at the line she has created, then your eye moves to the plants underneath her. The plants make a line in the bottom third of the photo. Also in this photo, space creates emphasis. This connection can be seen with the girl jumping and the space around her. There is a lot of space around her, so your eye is drawn to her, creating emphasis.
Step 4: Interpret- The purpose of this piece is to impress you. The firebird jump that the girl is doing in the photograph is hard to do, and that's what makes it impressive. The mood of the photograph is exciting because it is not everyone can do this and that's what makes it special.
Step 5: Evaluate-I really like this piece. I think it is unique and interesting. One thing that went well was capturing the jump, along with the foreground and background. One thing that I wish to improve on is making sure her back foot isn't as fuzzy.
