Part I: Artist Statement-
My major breakthroughs as an artist would be learning how to shade. Before taking painting class, I was clueless on how light and dark worked on a painting. After we did many lessons, and painted many examples, I got the hang of it in the end. It makes me feel accomplished because I learned something new and got the hang of it. For me, dance has been a huge part of me wanting to take more art classes. Since dance is a performing art, I wanted to go more into visual arts. Having visual art experience has helped me in dance when it comes to props and costume design.
My style involves bright colors. I like the happy feeling that it gives off. This relates to me as a person because I am in a good mood most of the time, and I try to make others feel as positive as I am. Painting should make you feel good. Physically moving the brush around should make you feel relaxed. I want to use that feeling that you have when you paint, and transfer it into my finished products.
My life without art would be lifeless. Art is fun, happy memories that you can make with your friends and family, but without that your personality could be very different. Art relates school to school because through the years you can track progress through the different art classes you take. You can follow your thinking and keep track of what you were into during high school. Art is related to work because of all of the different art careers out there. You could be anything you want, in the art field, especially if you have an artistic background. Art is renewal because it can help you find yourself. It can help determine your personality, your strengths and weaknesses, and your goals. Without it you are a step further away from truly knowing yourself.

Part II: Images of Artwork and RationaleVisual Arts Standard #1: Artistic Thinking and Behaviors - I can approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process.

Planning For Self-Directed 1
9"x12" Color Study Acrylic Painting
12"x9" Still Life Acrylic Painting
Rationale For Visual Arts Standard #1:
The still life painting shows problem solving because I had no idea how to shade and to have this painting turn out real I had to problem solve and figure out how to do it. The color study also shows problem solving because you have to measure out each diagonal line evenly. It has to be in a spiral and so you have to turn the canvas as you draw the lines, which took concentration. My planning shows my creativity skills because I had to come up with the ideas that I had to paint. I came up with the general idea of what I wanted to paint and then came up with the way I wanted the painting to be arranged.

Visual Arts Standard #2: Responding - I can apply literacy skills to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate art.
Critique for Landscape Painting-
Critique of 31-
Rationale for Visual Arts Standard #2:
In the beginning of the semester, I struggled with Interpret. I was only analyzing the theme of the painting, when I could have been analyzing the purpose, mood, or story. By my final critique I am able to tell the reader many things about the piece of artwork. I have been successful in my critiques because we did not have to do a critique on Self-Directed 1 if we got a 4 on every section of our critique of our landscape paintings. I got a 4 on every section of the critique of my landscape painting so I didn't have to do the other critique. I have taken into consideration the feedback from my critiques to make my future artwork better. Other people see things in a different way, and they could notice something that I don't. I always take into consideration the feedback I get.

Visual Arts Standard #3: Connecting - I can understand the relationship among the arts, history and world culture. I can make connections among the arts and to other disciplines, to goal-setting, and to interpersonal interaction.
Rationale for Visual Arts Standard #3:
I have connected my identity to my artwork in many ways. I painted a picture of the beach, which is my favorite place to go on vacation. I would like to live near a beach one day, and so I spend my time thinking about it. I tried to incorporate my thoughts and preferences into my painting. I use my artistic thinking and planning in my other classes when it comes to projects. To plan out the layouts and draw in illustration uses my knowledge from my art classes.

Rationale for Visual Arts Standard #4:
I have chose my best paintings in include in Visual Arts Standard #4: Producing and Presenting because it is the part of the portfolio where you show your growth. I chose to put the picture of the beach in the art show because I feel it represented my best work from my first year of taking a painting class. My final critique definitely has to be the best critique that I have done in this class. I chose to include it because it demonstrates my best work and growth. I have demonstrated my style in this class through bright colors. Almost ever painting that I have done this year in painting have had bright colors incorporated into it. I feel that bright colors show who I am as a person and since my style as an artist reflects my personality, many of my paintings are bright.

Part III: Evaluation of Portfolio-
This portfolio shows my growth as a student in this class. I came into this course not knowing a thing about painting and I am coming out of it with the knowledge on how to create visual art by acrylic paint. It shows my progress through all the different paintings and it shows everything that I have done in this class. I learned how to shade and create realistic looking paintings. You can see as you look through them. You can see the growth through my first paintings to my last ones. My 31 paintings are not as good as my final ones. Its such a huge transformation from the beginning of the semester to the end.
